Ed Faire well, Ed! Westfield

One of the original Flower Children of Haight-Ashbury in the late '60's, Ed Westfield, or Mihalik, was active with faires since being introduced to it at Kansas City in 1984. Later he moved to Dallas and called Scarborough Faire home.

He was the Coordinator for the SCRIBE (Serious Creations of Renaissance Information By Electronics), making the policy decisions on how the information was stored, distributed, and collected. To many he—with his wife, co-coordinator and data entry whiz Ellen—was the SCRIBE.

The oldest and best known online faire resource, the SCRIBE began as a bulletin board service (BBS - a dial-in computer service that predated the World Wide Web) for several years before moving to its present website with sophisticated databases and warehousing of information. Still many people do not know what the SCRIBE is all about. Some have heard brief descriptions of the SCRIBE, but still may not be aware of the full extent of it, and its purpose in serving the renaissance faire community. Some know it as a provider of information about faires. Others know it for the stored information on performers, merchants, staffs and others involved within the faire community—a national contact registry. Some know it for the multitude of articles, catalogs, electronic graphic art and other electronic services. There are more than 1,200 files with valuable information for faire folke. Still others know it as a good written contact point for the periodical Uproots, a tri-annual publishing of faires around the U.S. The SCRIBE is probably the most valuable single resource on renaissance faires, and deserves an extended visit.

The SCRIBE

Ed was a Marine, a San Francisco street performer, a tobacco field hand, caretaker of a horse ranch, and a professional data processor. He was a member in good standing of the AASSCC, the good ship the Sea Hawk, and a squire of the Free Lancers. Equally adept with a computer, a sword, or a 2000 pound armored horse and rider, he enjoyed helping the SCRIBE provide a service back to the faire community.

Most importantly, Ed was a kindred spirit, a collaborator, a supporter and above all a friend. He moved on to his next adventure much too soon for those of us he left behind.

With appreciation to the SCRIBE for many of the details.
